Brewer’s Blondies

Whoppers Close Up

Whoppers….

Being bored always makes me want to bake. What to bake this week? When I asked my youngest son, William, he requested something covered in frosting. He claims that he is sick of cookies. Unfortunately for him, I don’t have the time this week to make cupcakes or a finished cake. Brewer’s Blondies it is. You can find the recipe in Baked New Frontiers in Baking on page 129. I have tried quite a few of the recipes in this book already but this one is completely new for me. I have stopped and looked at this recipe more than once because my husband likes blondies but I however am not a fan of the candy Whoppers. I have never really liked them. Ever. Even when I was a child, they were always in the discard pile after trick or treating. I chose these bars because I wanted to fit in a new recipe with three baseball games, an all day baseball excursion to the Lansing Lugnuts ( yes, I live in Michigan ) and trying a new combination of flavors for an order that I have to fill for next weekend. Even while my husband was chopping the whoppers with the Cuisinart, I was extremely skeptical about how these were going to taste. I assembled the batter and had them in the oven in less than a half an hour. One of the things that I love about bars, make the batter and all of the dough goes in the oven at once. Clean up the kitchen while they are baking and voilà, dessert is ready and the mess is put away. The smells coming out of my oven during the 25 minutes of baking were slightly sweet and absolutely delicious. All of a sudden I couldn’t wait to give these bars a try. Oh boy they are super scrumptious. I decided that I just wanted a little taste, so I cut myself a very small square and took two bites, then I thought, maybe just one more small square. What can it hurt?? There is a slight malt flavor but I didn’t mind it because the two kinds of chocolate (chocolate chips and the chocolate coating of Whoppers) were blending wonderfully together along with the crunch of the toasted walnuts. If I hadn’t of made these blondies myself, I would never guess that there are Whoppers in them. Seriously. Then I decided to try one heated up with vanilla ice cream, a recommendation from the cook book. Wow. Way better warm with the chocolate slightly melted and the contrast of the cold ice cream. Definitely eat them heated up unless you just can’t wait the 30 seconds and want to shovel them in quickly without a fork. I won’t judge you. I promise.Brewer's Blondies

Warm these magnificent bars in the microwave for about 30 seconds add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and oh my goodness. Delicious!!
